Review: Conscious 108, A vegans Delight.

Eat right, live right.
That seems to be the motto these days. Remember when curly fries with cheese and bacon bits were considered food porn? Or chocolate cake with an Oreo center with a giant glass of cow milk? Or a huge slice of pizza? You know, Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives type of food. Ahh the good ol’ days, now every Instagram post on food porn is beet juice or smoothies made from almond milk and chia seeds or tofu fries. Where are all the meat eaters, the grilled cheese sandwich with extra cheese lovers?! The world has gone vegan crazy and I can now see why. Vegans in addition to being vegetarian do not indulge or use animal products or by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, you get the picture right?
I’m a true foodie, a skinny girl at heart, but the president of the fat girls club. It didn’t take much to persuade me into trying out some vegan eats. Conscious 108, a vegan restaurant with a homey feel, is located on 108 Greenway Road, Greenside Johannesburg. Man what an experience. I had the Conscious ‘Cheese Beef’ Burger with the side of the mini salad. The beef patty is made of soy wheat and the conscious cheese was a vegan cheese sauce, deliciously deceiving because had I not known it was vegan, I wouldn’t have known it was nondairy. It was served on a whole wheat roll topped with tomato, cucumber, grated carrot and caramelized onions. The mini salad complimented the burger so well. It consisted of tomato, cucumber, shredded lettuce with roasted cashew nuts sprinkled with sunflower seeds and a balsamic dressing. A combination for the gods I tell you. I washed everything down with a cold glass of pineapple flavored coconut water. Uhhhmmm… Coconut water is definitely an acquired taste and a taste my palette has yet to embrace. I ended off the meal with a gigantic piece of peanut butter and chocolate ganache cake which was the highlight of my time there.

Overall I would give the meal a solid 7 out of 10. The service was amazing too and I left the place not so wary of the vegan movement.
