If you’ve been around the scene & know the who’s who of the industry you would have definitely heard of the name Lebo Lukewarm & to most he was that super cool dude with dreadlocks & a camera but what many don’t know is Lebo is a pretty dope recording artist as well!
Releasing a debut project in 2013 titled “Here Forever Gone Forever EP” & a string of features alongside artists such as Ginger Trill, Blayze, Moneoa & ICU. Lebo drops 2 project’s for his sophomore release with “Swimming Practice” & “The Yacht Below.” #SPTYB
After working on SPTYB for 4 years, Lebo Lukewarm finally decided to release the project as two parts…
Mainly because “sonically they two were so different, yet belonged to the same person, they were like two sides of a coin” says Lebo
Kool Out caught up with Lebo to talk about his journey in music, his company CameraShyGuys & of course the music.
What’s good Lebo Lukewarm? Please introduce yourself to the people.
The name is Lebo Lukewarm, an often misunderstood creative
You’ve always been known to be a creative dabbling in photography, video & film making. When did the music bug bite?
Well what a lot of people don’t know is that, I’ve been making music since I was 12 years old as a producer and also part of a rap group ACT81 in Bloemfontein, in 2009 I met VtheVowel and we started a production Duo named “Michael Fallens” which later became known as CameraShyGuys which was joined by APH in 2012… In 2011 formed a group that never took off with myself, Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Greyhound & Buks.. It wasn’t until 2013, when I decided to go solo and develop myself as a solo musician..
“I think what helped was noting down events as they were happening, and I don’t mean writing verses, I’m talking just writing a journal so that I can revisit it later”
You have grown a lot as a writer & artist since your debut EP “Here Forever Gone Forever” back in 2013. How has the process been for you personally?
I think what helped was noting down events as they were happening, and I don’t mean writing verses, I’m talking just writing a journal so that I can revisit it later on when it is objective and no longer subjective so I can write it down lyrically, also collaborating and teaming up with some really talented people helped.. there are no egos in my circle, we all understand our strengths and that’s why we work so well together towards a common goal.
Tell us a bit more about CamaraShyGuys?
CameraShyGuys is a collaborative trio comprising of Lebo Lukewarm, VtheVowel & APH.. CSG is a well rounded creative hub that does Music production, Music Video Directing, and Commercial Music Composition.
You have just released 2 new project’s with Swimming Practice & The Yacht Below. Why 2 projects?
Mainly because sonically they two were so different, yet belonged to the same person, they were like two sides of a coin.
I released both projects as different chapters, because they were never going to be able to live on one page. This is what I call my Character arc.
“Swimming Practice is designed to make you see beyond the surface of the water that is Lebo Lukewarm”
Tell us more about the 2 project?
Swimming Practice – Don’t be afraid to burn bridges that no longer serve your best interests, don’t be afraid to jump in and swim across. I was once asked if I wasn’t worried that I was burning bridges and I replied by saying: “my parents ensured I went to swimming lessons when I was younger, so there was a time I had to go to swimming practice, for days when there will be no bridge for me to cross.”
Swimming Practice is melodramatic in tone, vocally features two vocalist who have appeared with me before on my debut EP (Here Forever, Gone Forever) Joy Swaks from London on “Other Guys” & Balinde who graces us with a powerful 16 on “Dead Roses.” I also worked with songstress Melo B Jones on “Same Mistakes” & Producer VtheVowel on “Hoes Don’t Know”
On Swimming Practice I worked with two producers VtheVowel and APH of CameraShyGuys with additional production from various musician from across the globe namely London and LA
The dark sided Swimming Practice EP gives you a look into a more emotional and macabre Lebo, where I address my childhood, the death of my mother to cancer and the social ills we face today.
All in all Swimming Practice is designed to make you see beyond the surface of the water that is Lebo Lukewarm, You are meant to feel each song as it is laid down as a story for you to follow.
“The Yacht Below is a good and clear indication of where I am currently”
The Yacht Below – The sunken ship… When times are tough, because they will be… look up you will see the sparkling water as the sun breaks through. Then you will remember your dark days (Swimming Practice) and you will use those days to help you kick through the dense water and downward draft of your yacht going down, you will be happy to know that, the surface is close and the shore is closer.
The Yacht Below is a good and clear indication of where I am currently, the first beat that landed in my email inbox was from Ameen Harron (Cape Town producer) in April 2016 while I was in Cape Town for a month, that email was the reason why we have The Yacht Below now. After returning to Johannesburg, I met up with Ragdé Omar (JHB producer) & started working on a few new tracks and before we knew it, things took shape and I found himself in Cape Town again for another month and worked on the remainder of the project.
Thanks to Marco Polo for his amazing work on the mix and master, also on co-producing “Same Mistakes Again” with me and also featuring.
Zadok for his phenomenal additional production on The Yacht Below this kid is magic and will soon take the industry by storm!
On the title track “The Yacht Below” features Cape Town vocalist/musician Dani Bagel who lends us her angelic voice to add amazingly to the song, we also see JStar (Drummer) in my opinion, one of South Africa’s finest drummers!!! He comes in with a phenomenal drum solo piece. Like WOW!!
Caleb Williams (singer/songwriter) from CapeTown did not come to play with us when he featured on “Make you look” bringing his sweet well-rounded voice!
“Driving” introduces us to Kaya Antoinette (singer/songwriter) from London as she comes through with her unorthodoxy vocal tone to add flavour to a already flavourful record.
The Yacht Below is clearly the “vibe” when it comes to ticking all the summer themes… with its bounce, catchy hooks and still maintaining the musicality… The Yacht Below is definitely best enjoyed with a view! The title draws reference to one of my biggest influences musically Andre3000 and his title “The Love Below”
You say you worked with Marco Polo? Is this the Canadian producer Marco Polo?
Haha!! Unfortunately this is a case of mistaken identity that we have recently uncovered, the Marco Polo that I worked with is the producer/rapper from ICU a Johannesburg Hiphop group…
Aight…. If you had to say? What song(s) off the project’s are your favourite & why?
Well it’s a bit hard to make that distinction, but if I have to… my favourite I must say is “Dead Roses” ft Balinde on Swimming Practice. It is a firm favourite due to its sentimental nature.
“We all don’t have to sound the same, cause the consumers are also craving the other”
Whats next for Lebo Lukewarm?
Well I’ve been making music for myself and my mates and I’m ready to open it up to a lot more people now… plus this country can do with a different voice, we all don’t have to sound the same, cause the consumers are also craving the “other”…
Where can people get a hold of you for features or audio & visual work?
Everything lives on the internet, so if you’re looking for anything that I have ever been on you’ll find it by searching Lebo Lukewarm.
