INTERVIEW: Kool Out Talks To DJ Lag Ahead Of “Maribou State” Show. #EightOfEight

Eight artists will be opening for electro duo Maribou State on the 8th & 9th December 2017 at Mercury Live (Cape Town) & Good Luck Bar (Johannesburg). Kool Out had the opportunity to ask these stellar eight local acts, eight questions as the lead up to the Maribou State party begins…. #EightForEight

Today we have Durban Gqom king DJ Lag.

Pioneering the Gqom sound of Durban DJ Lag‘s superb production skills have helped him captivate audiences across the country & around the world performing in counties such as London, Poland, Switzerland & Austria are just some of the places Lag has rocked & in 2016 released his debut project “DJ Lag EP.”

DJ Lag you have been attributed with single handedly exporting GQOM to local and international shores. Is this a fair assessment of your contribution to the music scene?

I like to think of myself as a pioneer, one of the originators of the genre. There’s a lot of my peers doing things for the culture like Distruction Boyz, so we all work together in that sense, but I do feel like it’s my duty to bring gqom to the world.

You have been quoted many times on your surprise at how far music would take you. What have you discovered about yourself while travelling?

It’s more what I discovered about the music. Music works in amazing ways, connecting people and breaking barriers like language and culture.

It’s hard to stay humble when greeted with such acclamation and success and yet you seem to have done so. What’s your secret?

Always put the music first

“Stay true to your roots” what does such a phrase mean to you?

Stay true to what inspires you or what sparked your passion and you won’t go wrong

“When I make music I want people to forget their worries, get lost in the groove, stop thinking for a while and just dance”

When making a track like ‘Ice Drop’ what exactly are you trying to achieve?

When I make music I want people to forget their worries, get lost in the groove, stop thinking for a while and just dance.

You are one of 8 local acts opening for Maribou, where and when was the first time you ever heard a song of theirs?

When I found out about the gig, I checked out some of their music and I was impressed. Made me very excited to be a part of this line-up!!

What can audiences expect from your performance on the 9th December at Good Luck Bar?

To dance, dance, dance! It’s gonna be a party.

If there was a catch phrase titled ‘DJ Lag Kool’…what would that express?

It would be an expression of just being yourself.
