Common, Robert Glasper & Kerriem Riggins come together to form the new super group “August Greene.”
Formed in 2018 after sharing the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their song “Letter to the Free”, which was part of Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary 13th. The trio then made their live debut on January 26, 2018 at New York’s Highline Ballroom as part of Glasper’s sixth annual Grammy Awards party as well as performing an NPR Tiny Desk Concert in February 2018.
The trio have now released their self titled debut album comprising of 11 songs with the only features coming from Samora Pinderhughes on the tracks “Let’s Go” and “Practice,” and Brandy on the song, “Optimistic.”
Common, Glasper & Riggins have an effortless chemistry on August Greene due to their frequent collaborations in the past & the project is a smooth blend of jazz-inflected tracks with all the three men delivering an equal & solid contribution to the project musically while collectively reflecting on the disparate state of the black union in America.
This is grown-folk rap, but make no mistake August Greene is future-minded.
