ARTICLE: SECRET WARS PT. 1: Drake vs. Iron Man [Video]

In the recent spate of Marvel movies, I find it funny that at no point did my thoughts jump back to a song that told me more about hip-hop and its relations to the comics…probably way before the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe began.

Growing up, at some point near the beginning of my teenage years, I found myself being rattled with rappers like KRS-ONE, Immortal Technique and Proverb. I then was fascinated by a song called ‘The Secret Wars Pt. 1’ by a rapper named The Last Emperor. The song details an imaginary fight between the Marvel Heroes, against the rappers of the time. In the song, The Emperor imitates all the vocals of the artists being mentioned with what seems like little to no effort at all. In this version, I plan to do the same, with more contemporary artists. find a Marvel counterpart and figure…if they actually had a fight..who would win?

Drake is Iron Man

Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham, the former child actor turned into a rap sensation, on of former musician, dual citizen of both the United States and Canada, first rapper to do a lot (I was too lazy to write it up…the list was legit too long) and is considered a leader and probably was one of the most decorated rappers who’s still at the top of his game right now. Arrogant but his conviction when he tells you he’s the best, has you doubting many rappers. Much like Iron Man, Drizzy is running in the lead when it comes to the culture. Rich, relatively handsome (I’ve heard some ladies be concerned about the eyebrows, his skin tone, his hair, his feelings…if I didn’t know any better I’d say he’s got woman problems….but I digress). He’s officially in the Forbes 5 for hip-hop after Dre, Jay, Diddy and Birdman, he’s still got the records he’s been holding since forever, which include

  • being the first male artist to have be at the top of the Billboard 200 for 10 nonsecutive weeks,
  • most charted songs (154) among solo artists in the history of the Billboard Hot 100,
  • the most simultaneously charted Hot 100 songs in a single week (24)
  • the most time on the Hot 100 (431 weeks)
  • the most Hot 100 debuts in a week (21)
  • and he also has the most number one singles on the Hot Rap Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rhythmic Charts.

Much like Tony, Drake came in the game and led from the jump even though he had the advantage of ‘money’, his DNA seemed to have been soaked in winning cause he was acting by the age of 16, meanwhile Iron Man/Tony Stark was graduating from MIT at 17 . Both these men are known for their confidence and being confident in it all more especially in all their ignorance. Understand that Stark is a ladies man, in more ways than one. Between both the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe films…Drake…well

Drake is currently undergoing a young reassurance period after he got his ass handed to him to a big OG who thinks he runs the world…if not the universe, kinda what Tony got in the Infinity War movie. While we await both their individual efforts at returning to the helm of their respective games, one cant help but imagine that if they had to fight against each other using their most powerful efforts, with money being cancelled out, what would happen?

In this alternate universe, I foresee Drake taking the first fall, but much like  every Avengers movie, Infinity War being the case in point, Drake might come back with facts. This is a Drake thing, go out, get doubted then be the underdog. Understand that this might be more a strategy…it happens every time. Meek mill had Charged up, then a few days of no releases had Back-To-Back being dropped to end his career. Tony is similar in how he needs to be broken down as well and build up the idea of being an underdog as well, Iron Man 1, 2 and 3 had the same result…I’d assume the same about the last Avengers film…but I dont wanna release spoilers.

I feel like the only time Stark would win is if he caused Drake to start to explain things a without a need… which seems to only have happened once.

Either way, if the rapper had to fight his Marvel counterpart, I believe the winner would be Drizzy, punchlines, has the longevity, and well, Tony aint much without the Iron suit. It could be argued that Drake is also nothing without his beard, but he’s gone almost a full 24 month without letting us know he’s a dad (the nigga didn’t even flinch or slip…imagine, talk about DL for real), so who knows what he could do without.

Next week we’ll look at another pairing of a rapper and their Marvel Counterpart. You have match up’s you’d like to see? Comic characters you’d want us to compare to real life heros? Hit us up in the comment section with your thoughts, see what interesting things you match-up could bring.
