DJ Premier Confirms Joint Album With Pete Rock For 2015

After collaborating on one-off tracks over the years, DJ Premier and Royce da 5’9 are officially set to release their full-length collaboration PRhyme on Tuesday (December 9). In the midst of promoting the upcoming release, Primo and Royce participated in a Reddit AMA and answered questions about the album, their own respective solo careers, and what’s next from each of them.

Confirming a joint project with Pete Rock, DJ Premier announced a single from a full-length collab will arrive next month.

“We have talked about doing a sequel but we will see later down the line after this one comes out,” Primo said of the possibility of a PRhyme follow-up. “As for the Pete Rock Album, we are doing a single in January to start the project. He is producing half of it and I am doing the other half.”

DJ Premier also answered a question about his perceived beef with The Notorious B.I.G. but explained patching up the issue before the rapper passed away.

“Me and Big never had beef,” he said. “There was some issues regarding one of my artists Jeru The Damaja but that got taken care of.”

“‘One Day’ did spark the controversy,” he admitted in a separate answer. “I went thru the motions but all is well and me and BIG cleared it up before he died. Plus BIG was NEVER called out on that record at all. speculation can sometimes lead to the wrong point getting across. As for Jeru, he and I are totally fine. We split over a business decision. We are gonna work this year on some new stuff.”

DJ Premier also provided the backstory behind the commissioning of PRhyme and his apprehension with sampling exclusively Adrian Younge productions.

“Mike Herrard who works at Shady brought the idea to us for a Slaughterhouse EP of 5 songs,” Premier said. “After scheduling everyone was taking too long, Royce and I decided to do it together and that turned it into a full LP.

“The biggest challenge for me was Producing a full LP with ONLY sampling Adrian Younge’s catalog of music,” he added. “But Royce convinced me to give it a chance. I am happy that I took the chance to do something different. Now we have PRhyme December 9th.”

During the AMA, Royce also confirmed that Slaughterhouse’s next album will arrive in 2015 and left open the possibility of another Bad Meets Evil collaboration with Eminem.

“We’ve both grown as people and as artists so we push each other a little more lyrically these days,” Royce said of his fellow Detroit emcee.
